5 out of 5 stars The book that sould have come with the camera body   October 27, 2009

This little expanded guide should be packed with each and every Nikon D3X. For $8,200.00, you would imagine more than the paperback of technobabble provided. This little book is IT! It contains useful info that can be transferred to the the camera's settings the very first day AND you'll understand why you made them! A bonus that should b e in everyone's bag. It has a permanent in this shooter's bag, and although I don't have to refer to it often, I know it's there!

Review
The above statement applies to to not only my D3X camera but also to this
incredibly useful guide, which has helped me to learn the camera's features.

I have read many instruction manuals and invariably get bored and confused
before I have really learned too much, then have then muddled through and
not really used the camera to it full extent. This Expanded Guide is written
by a Nikon expert and the book clarifies the functions of both the D3 and
the D3x, including getting the right exposure, technical tips, lenses and
lighting.

When I am out photographing with my D3X I wouldn't be without this amazingly
useful book, as it helps me to take better photos.

5 out of 5 stars The Manual Nikon should include   June 14, 2010
Paul Floodman (Orange County, CA)
This is the manual Nikon should include with the camera.

While Nikon manuals are informative and comprehensive this gives you more "bottom line" reasons and techniques.

The pictures and simplified approach are good for both pros and advanced amateurs.

A very good guide.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and thorough guide to a wonderful camera.   February 4, 2010

I do not (yet) own the Nikon D3X. There is the possibility of a project for which I would need a camera that would make prints as large as those the 24.5
megapixel D3X can produce. I am experienced with digital slr's, I have the Nikon D-80 and am comfortable with both the camera and Photoshop. However, always hearing the D3X referred to as a "pro" camera had me a little inhibited. Was it something I could handle? How steep is the learning curve? How different is this "pro" camera from my "pro-sumer" camera?

Luckily, this guide has set my mind somewhat at ease. Yes, there are features and menu options that allow customizing that I'm unfamiliar with, but they are clearly explained and I don't have to know it all from the start, and some I will never need (I think). The usual options I now use, such as Program Mode or Aperture priority are available here too and my current flash unit is compatible. The camera has enough familiar options that I can start using it out of the box and expand from there. The learning curve will be steep but gradual, the camera seems well-designed and the controls and options are all logical and relatively unintimidating. The book's scope, tone, and depth have been very reassuring. The logical progression in which the information is presented, and the detail in which it is presented make this guide both easy to read and a dependable source of reference. In addition to the menu-by-menu, button-by-button, item-by-item camera-specific detail, there are general photography pages that are nice to have but not specifically D3X related. The book also contains a handy cheat-sheet in the form of small cards to carry along and that double as neutral gray and white balance references. The book itself is not that large that you can't take it with you. (I probably will).

For me, by far the most important sections dealt with lenses. Going from a camera with a 1.5 multiplier and DX lenses to a full-size sensor camera with FX lenses I was concerned that some of my lenses would become obsolete (plus it requires an adjustment in thinking). I was reassured that I could use DX mode and still use the lenses (at a cost in size, but still...). In addition to describing the general features of each category of lens, there is a section that lists all the compatible lenses currently available for the D3X as FX lenses and as DX lenses. It also gave me a good general idea about batteries, battery charger, flash cards, and other peripheral investments I would need to make in addition to the camera body. I now have a much better idea of the initial investment I might need to make, and how much I'm likely to need if we get the project.

I read the book cover to cover, not as a reference looking up specific topics. I found everything I wanted to know and many things I needed to know but hadn't thought of. The only topic I didn't see addressed (and which is a big factor for anyone considering a camera with this capacity) is the computing power needed to actually process these images without crashing your computer. I suppose that this is really out of the actual scope of the book, so I cannot hold it against it, but it would have been nice to have it all in one book.

By the way, the book covers the D3 as well. This is a very similar camera but with a lower megapixel count.

3 out of 5 stars A Larger, Color Version of Your Manual   January 3, 2010

This book bills itself as "The Expanded Guide," and as long as you define "expanded" as "the manual that came with your camera, but with larger print and color photographs," you'll be satisfied with what it has to offer. Seemingly targeted at novices who want a somewhat clearer explanation of the basics than what Nikon's own manual provides, it does make you wonder if there's really a need for a newbie guide to Nikon's most expensive and professional DSLRs. While this book clearly explains how to operate the controls on the D3 and D3x, there is very little depth beyond that. In short, if you're new to Nikon, or if you bought a D3 or D3x as your first DSLR.... or, if you just want a more user-friendly version of the camera manual... then you may find enough here to justify the discounted purchase price on Amazon. Others should look for a different guidebook.

Thank you for taking the time to read this review and I hope it provided helpful information to guide your purchase decision.
